Siberian plants shift their phenology in response to climate change

چکیده

Siberia has undergone dramatic climatic changes due to global warming in recent decades. Yet, the ecological responses these are still poorly understood a lack of data. Here, we use unique data set from Russian ‘Chronicles Nature’ network analyse long-term (1976–2018) phenological shifts leaf out, flowering, fruiting and senescence 67 common Siberian plant species. We find that boreal forest plants advanced their early season (leaf out flowering) mid-season (fruiting) phenology by −2.2, −0.7 −1.6 days/decade, delayed onset 1.6 days/decade during this period. These mean values, however, subject substantial intraspecific variability, which is partly explained plants' growth forms. Trees shrubs flowering (−3.1 −3.3. days/decade) faster than herbs (−1 day/decade), presumably more direct exposure flower buds ambient air for woody vegetation. For senescence, detected reverse pattern: stronger delays (2.1 (1.0–1.2 days/decade), effects autumn frosts on leaves herbs. Interestingly, timing all four forms at similar paces, 1.4 1.7 trees Our findings point strong, yet heterogeneous, response warming. Furthermore, results highlight species- form-specific differences among study species could be used identify particularly risk decline low adaptive capacity or loss synchronization with important interaction partners.

Effects of climate change and cultivar on summer maize phenology

To identify countermeasures to the effects of climate warming on crop production, we mustunderstand the changes in crop phenology and the relationships between phenology and climatechange and cultivar. We used summer maize phenological and climate data in the North ChinaPlain, collected from 1981 to 2010. This study analyzed the spatiotemporal trends inphenological data and lengths of different...

Phenotypic plasticity and adaptive evolution contribute to advancing flowering phenology in response to climate change.

Anthropogenic climate change has already altered the timing of major life-history transitions, such as the initiation of reproduction. Both phenotypic plasticity and adaptive evolution can underlie rapid phenological shifts in response to climate change, but their relative contributions are poorly understood. Here, we combine a continuous 38 year field survey with quantitative genetic field exp...

Phenology of two interdependent traits in migratory birds in response to climate change.

In migratory birds, arrival date and hatching date are two key phenological markers that have responded to global warming. A body of knowledge exists relating these traits to evolutionary pressures. In this study, we formalize this knowledge into general mathematical assumptions, and use them in an ecoevolutionary model. In contrast to previous models, this study novelty accounts for both trait...

Leaf morphology shift linked to climate change.

Climate change is driving adaptive shifts within species, but research on plants has been focused on phenology. Leaf morphology has demonstrated links with climate and varies within species along climate gradients. We predicted that, given within-species variation along a climate gradient, a morphological shift should have occurred over time due to climate change. We tested this prediction, tak...
